Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport (SSR) sits in the south-east of the island, near Plaine Magnien, which means almost every hotel is a real drive away. Here is what getting from the terminal to your room actually involves, and what it should cost.
Taxis: the default option
A taxi is how most visitors leave the airport, and it is straightforward: desks inside the arrivals hall quote a fixed price by destination, so there is no need to haggle on arrival. Expect to pay roughly 4,000 rupees to Grand Baie and the north, about 3,000 rupees to Flic en Flac and the west, and about 3,000 rupees to Le Morne and the south coast. The east coast resorts sit closest to the airport and cost less.
These are fixed, pre-agreed prices at the official desk, not metered fares, so confirm the total before you get in.
Pre-booked transfers
Booking a transfer through your hotel or a transfer company ahead of time usually costs close to the same as the airport taxi desk, sometimes a little more, in exchange for a driver waiting with your name on a board and no queue to negotiate. Worth it for a late arrival or a large group; unnecessary if you are comfortable finding the taxi desk yourself.
Public bus
Technically possible, rarely sensible with luggage. The nearest useful hub is Centre de Flacq to the north-east or Mahébourg to the south, both requiring at least one change to reach the coast you are staying on, and the last buses of the day run well before most long-haul flights land. Treat the bus as a budget option for a light day pack, not a first-night-with-suitcases plan.
Ride-hailing apps
Coverage at the airport is inconsistent, and official taxi operators have the strongest presence in the arrivals area. Do not count on it as your only plan for a late arrival.
Getting back to the airport
The same fixed-price logic applies in reverse: hotels can arrange a return taxi, or you can agree a price directly with a local driver. Build in more time than the drive suggests, since the approach to the airport can back up around flight banks, and airlines generally want you checked in well ahead of a long-haul departure.
