Grand Baie gets the nightlife reputation, and it earns it. But if you are staying on the west coast, driving an hour north for a drink makes no sense — and Flic en Flac has the better sunset anyway.
Why the west wins at sundown
Simple geography. The west coast faces directly into the sunset over open water, with no headland in the way. Flic en Flac's long beach means you can walk until you find a stretch you like rather than competing for a terrace.
The public beach itself is one of the best sunset spots on the island and costs nothing. Locals arrive with cool boxes and folding chairs an hour before, which tells you everything about whether it is worth doing.
What is open
The strip along the main road has a run of bars and restaurants, mostly casual, mostly cheaper than the equivalent in Grand Baie. Expect Creole and Chinese places, a couple of pizzerias, and beach bars that serve until the kitchen closes.
The honest caveat: this is not a late-night destination. Most kitchens stop around ten and bars follow. There is no real club scene. If you want to be out at two in the morning, you are going to Grand Baie.
Tamarin, ten minutes south
Quieter again, with a surf-town feel and a handful of good bars overlooking the bay. Worth the short drive for a change of scene, and the sunset from Tamarin bay is arguably better than from Flic en Flac because you get the headland silhouette with it.
What to drink
Local rum, without hesitation. Mauritius has a serious rum tradition and the agricultural rums made from cane juice rather than molasses are worth seeking out. A decent local rum costs a fraction of an imported spirit, and imported wine carries heavy duty and is rarely worth the price.
Phoenix and Blue Marlin are the local beers. Cold, cheap, unremarkable, and exactly right after a day in the sun.
Getting home
Same rule as everywhere on the island: buses have finished long before you have. If you are not walking home, agree a taxi fare before you get in, and take the driver's number for the return.
The trade
The west gives you better sunsets, lower prices and a quieter evening. The north gives you choice, live music and somewhere still open at midnight. Neither is better; they are different holidays. Pick the coast that matches the evenings you actually want, because getting between them at night is expensive.
